Sawhill Center Ribbon Cutting

The Sawhill Center Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at the Historical Society of Carnegie will take place at noon May 29. Lt. Colonel Robert R. Sawhill Jr. was a Carnegie resident who served in the Vietnam War. His plane was shot down near Hanoi and he spent 2,031 days in captivity as a POW. He received the Purple Heart and numerous other awards, including the Silver Star with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Bronze Star. He also received numerous commendations for service and leadership during his 30 years of service and retired from the Pentagon. His family donated his personal memorabilia to be displayed at the Historical Society. For more information, call 412-276-7447.

Bingo, Beer and Bidding

This online fundraiser benefits the Carnegie Boys and Girls Summer Camp Scholarship Fund. On June 5 at 6:30 p.m., enjoy bingo, beer and bidding on some great auction items; all while supporting the local youth. Chartiers Street road work

Drilling work on Chartiers Street in Bridgeville began May 19. Single-lane alternating traffic will occur on Chartiers Street from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays through June 9 between Dewey Avenue and Winfield Street. Flaggers will control traffic. Crews from Armstrong Drilling will conduct drilling operations.

Flag raising ceremony

Collier Township’s annual Memorial Day ceremony will take place 8:45 a.m. May 31 at the Veteran’s and Flag Day monument at the municipal building. Guest speaker will be retired Captain John Kelly and his service dog, Ranger. Ranger will demonstrate various commands. Donations will be collected to help support the training of medical service dogs for veterans.

Memorial Day Parade canceled

The 2021 Carnegie Memorial Day Parade has been canceled due to covid concerns – planning for the event begins in January/February and at that time the covid climate was very unpredictable. The 2022 parade is scheduled for May 29.

Carnegie Crawl

The Carnegie Crawl returns June 11 and will run from 5-9 p.m. every 2nd Friday of every month through October.

Retailers stay open late and will be offering specials, music at the corner of Broadway and East Main and entertainment at many venues. This is a family fun event.

South Fayette Outdoor Yoga in the Park

There will be outdoor yoga for adults at Boys Home Park, 2121 Ridge Road every Monday through June 7 (excluding Memorial Day) from 7-8 p.m.

Enjoy traditional hatha yoga classes with asana (postures), pranayama (breathing exercises) and meditation. Classes are designed for all ages and levels of flexibility. Have a yoga mat, block or pillow, and strap or belt handy. Cost is $11 per class. Classes will move online in case of inclement weather. Masks are required.

Movies in the park

South Fayette Township’s “Movies in the Park” summer series is set. Movies start at dusk (around 8:30 p.m.) at Fairview Park. Bring a blanket, chairs, bug spray and snacks.

Designated spaces for each household will ensure social distancing.

July 9: “Trolls World Tour”

Aug. 13: “Toy Story 4”
