For a good portion of the 20th century, the most powerful man in New York City wasn’t the mayor or the police chief or some Manhattan millionaire.
Rather, it was city employee named Robert Moses, whose somewhat mundane job titles—planning commission chairman, parks commissioner, head of tunnels and bridges—belied the tremendous influence he wielded from those positions.
His stubbornness forced the Brooklyn Dodgers to leave town. His Shea Stadium project brought the Mets to Queens. His freeways made car travel (slightly) easier in the city, but bisected the Bronx and accelerated that area’s economic decline. It’s a complicated legacy.
If you’ve ever considered becoming the Robert Moses of Bridgeville—or if you’ve ever wanted to get more involved in your community and help make a positive change— now is your chance.
