UPDATE: It looks like work might begin in May. We hope to have more details about the project next week and will update accordingly.
A major overhaul of the Route 50-Washington Pike intersection could begin as soon as Monday, April 3 within the next six weeks or so.
This could mean lane restrictions in the area Mondays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. or from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Work is scheduled to end by July 31.
The project, which includes widened roads, additional lanes, and an adaptive traffic signal, is part of a multi-phase plan to alleviate traffic congestion at the intersection. This phase is being funded by Newbury Associates, who have been building an expansive housing and retail development off of Route 50 in South Fayette. As part of this same contract, Interstate 79 exit 54 (just down the road on Route 50) will also be revamped.
We have a call into PennDOT for specifics about what’s coming this summer. We’ll update when we hear back.
