March 11, 2016 By Tim McNellie

This photo from Bellingham, Washington illustrates the difference between LED and some older-style streetlights.

Bridgeville may authorize the conversion of 400 streetlights to use LED fixtures that cast a whiter light and use less energy that the borough’s current lamps. The switch could save the borough $26,000 per year in lighting costs. Council is expected to vote on the matter at the Monday, March 14 meeting, which starts at 7 p.m. Also… [Read More]

Is Waste Management Leaving Your Cardboard Boxes On The Curb On Recycling Days? This Might Be Why

Last week, we posted a quiz about Bridgeville’s recycling rules. Soon after, some residents pointed out that corrugated cardboard left out for Waste Management on recycling days isn’t always picked up. We talked to borough manager Lori Collins today, and here’s what we learned: Waste Management is strictly enforcing the rule that corrugated cardboard must be flattened and… [Read More]

February 29, 2016 By Tim McNellie

A close-up of a synthetic turf football field

Concerns about carcinogens used on some synthetic turf fields have Chartiers Valley officials debating whether to replace the high school stadium surface. Last week, CV’s Board of Education watched an ESPN report about cancer cases among soccer players who competed on fields that use material from recycled tires to provide cushioning and support. It’s called crumb rubber—the little black granules that get kicked… [Read More]

February 20, 2016 By Tim McNellie

A Google Maps street view of Washington Avenue Near Station Street

The latest issue of Pittsburgh Magazine attempts to predict which neighborhoods in the city proper are going to be “hot” in a few years. In other words, the areas that are most likely to be full of new restaurants, unique retail stores, and infused with a sense of community pride. Reading the story, it’s hard not to notice that Bridgeville meets or exceeds… [Read More]
