American Legion Turns Around Its Fortunes with Membership Drive, Community Support

April 13, 2015 By Tim McNellie

legion_emblemThe Tribune Review recently profiled Bob Milliken, Vietnam veteran and commander of American Legion Post 54 in Bridgeville Among the revelations is that the Legion nearly closed its doors for good last year. But a membership drive, community support, and extra hall rental brought the post out back into the black ink.

“Last June and July, it was dismal. There was a lot of red ink,” Milliken told the Trib, noting that the post is more than just a social spot for veterans. It’s also a support system, of sorts.

Older veterans can count on assistance from fellow legion members. This winter, members shoveled sidewalks and driveways, and a fundraiser was held for an ailing member.

“We take care of our own,” said Milliken, who has been with the post for 11 years.

If you see Milliken around town, ask him about joining the Legion. As the Trib notes, he keeps applications in his car. Cost is $25.50 per year, or $20 for a social membership.
